Coloured angiogram of coronary artery stenosis

Rights Managed

Coronary artery stenosis. Coloured angiogram (X- ray) of a heart showing stenosis in a coronary artery. The coronary arteries (blue) run on the surface of the heart, feeding blood to the heart muscle. A pinched section of coronary artery (in dark box) is restricting blood flow in the later sections of artery (green). This is caused by atherosclerosis, in which the artery has become narrowed due to a deposit of fatty plaque in the artery walls. Restricted blood supply to heart muscle causes chest pain and can kill tissue leading to heart attack. Coronary angiograms are created by injecting an X-ray opaque dye into the coronary arteries using a catheter.
