Caption: Angina pectoris. Artwork of the heart within a heart showing the causes of angina pectoris (chest pain). Coronary arteries (red, branching) supply the heart muscle with oxygen. At upper right, the arteries can be seen to be narrowed by a yellow lining (atheroma) on their inner walls. Atheroma is made up of fatty deposits, and can block the blood supply, leading to an area of heart muscle (green) receiving insufficient oxygen. Other arteries can be seen narrowing (lower right). Here, the arteries beyond the narrowing (stenosis) are filled with deoxygenated blood (mauve). Lack of oxygen to the heart muscle causes severe chest pain, and may precede a heart attack.
