Caption: Heart dextrocardia. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a patient showing dextrocardia, a rare condition where the heart is situated in the right hand side of the chest (at left on image). The heart (light blue) is seen pointing towards the wrong side of the chest. But the aortic arch (the main artery leaving the heart) is on the normal left side here (at right on image), above the heart. The liver (yellow) is also on the normal side in the abdomen, at lower left. People with dextrocardia sometimes have their abdominal organs also rever- sed. The cause of dextrocardia is unknown. Treat- ment is unnecessary unless the heart is malformed.
