Caption: Coronary artery blockage. Coloured angiograms (arterial X-rays) of a patient's heart before (right) and after (left) a heart attack. The dark blue lines are the blood being supplied to the heart by the coronary arteries. On the left the red arrow indicates where the blood flow has been cut off, probably by a thrombosis (abnormal blood clot). In contrast, the angiogram on the right shows an uninterrupted blood flow. On the left, the heart muscle starved of blood and oxygen will die, leading to the severe pain of a frequently fatal heart attack. Angiograms are X-rays of a radio-opaque dye injected into the bloodstream.
