Caption: Heart tissue damage. Light micrograph of a section through the endocardium, the membrane that lines the heart (across top), following a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Necrotic (dead) muscle fibres (across bottom) have stained a deeper red, but their nuclei no longer stain. Infarction can be caused by loss of blood flow to the heart's coronary arteries (ischaemia), due to a blood clot (thrombus). Magnification unknown.
