Caption: Cardiac dystrophy. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a cross-section through the muscle fibres of a heart with dystrophy. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight tissues, cellular structures and proteins: cardiac muscle (red), cell nuclei (blue), dystrophin (green). Dystrophin is an important muscle protein that connects the cytoskeleton of a muscle fibre to its surroundings. Deficiency of this protein causes muscular dystrophy. Here, the dystrophin is disrupted as seen in cases of muscular dystrophy. For the corresponding image of normal heart muscle, see P216/574.
