Caption: Calcium overload in heart cell, fluorescent light micrograph. This is one of the models for what happens during a heart attack. A fluorescent dye, fluo-3, has been used to highlight calcium levels, from low levels (green), to high levels (red). Muscle cell contraction is triggered by rising calcium levels. Normally, the calcium levels trigger the beating of the heart, but in this case calcium overload is interfering with the contraction of the heart muscle cell.
