Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an occluded blood vessel in the human lung. At centre, a small pulmonary blood vessel can be seen, its lumen filled with clotted red blood cells. Fibrous tissue of the lung surrounds it. A clot (thrombus) such as this may develop due to a thrombosis occurring in the main blood vessel from which this smaller branch comes. Thrombosis can occur where the inner wall of an artery or vein is damaged. Occlusion may seriously reduce blood flow, or stop it altogether. A danger is that part of the clot may break away, and lodge elsewhere in the body. Magnification: x250 at 6x4.5cm size.
