Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a thrombus or clot occluding a small pulmonary blood vessel in the human lung. A net of fibrin strands can be seen as a fibrous meshwork that forms the basis of this clot. Fibrin is produced by the action of the enzyme thrombin on soluble fibrinogen in the blood. Damage to a blood vessel causes clot forma- tion which seals the point of injury. This clot fills the entire lumen; occlusion (blockage) may seriously reduce blood flow, or stop it altogether. A danger is that part of the clot may break away, and lodge elsewhere in the body.Mag:x4,250 at 8x10inch,x1,300 at 6x7cm.
