Caption: Phlebitis. View of swollen veins in the leg of an elderly woman, due to phlebitis. Phlebitis is an inflammation of the wall of a vein, most commonly seen as a complication of varicose veins. A segment of vein becomes painful and tender, and the surrounding skin feels hot and appears red. Here, thrombosis (blood clotting) has occurred in the superficial veins, but this is not as dangerous as deep vein thrombosis. Treatment includes wearing an elastic bandage, together with taking drugs to relieve the pain and swelling and to dissolve the clots.
