Caption: Plaque in iliac artery. Coloured ultrasound scan inside a narrowed part of the iliac artery of the leg, showing plaque (fatty deposits). Dark blue regions at the edges are outside of the artery. Looking down the artery in three-dimensions, the wall appears red, then orange, to a distant yellow lumen. Fatty deposits (pink) adhere to the wall making it rough in places. Atherosclerosis is an arterial disease in which cholesterol rich fatty plaques form, narrowing inner walls of arteries. In turn this can obstruct blood flow and may lead to serious diseases. These include thrombosis (formation of blood clots), angina pectoris, heart attack, stroke, and gangrene.
