Caption: Atherosclerosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph of the surface of a plaque (atheroma) which is partially blocking an artery to cause a condition called atherosclerosis. The plaque consists of a deposit containing a mixture of fats (such as cholesterol) & proteins (such as fibrin) which appears yellow/green. A number of dead red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) lie on the ather- oma's surface. An atheroma can greatly reduce the flow of blood in an artery. These blockages are a major cause of heart attacks and strokes. Athero- sclerosis is principally caused by high fat diets, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, obesity, & inactivity. Magnification: x600 at 6x6cm size.
