Caption: Iliac artery atheroma. Coloured angiogram (X- ray) of atheroma of the iliac artery. The large green artery (centre) is the aorta. The atheroma can be seen as a narrowing of the lower right branch (green, lower centre), which is the iliac artery leading to the leg. An atheroma is a build-up of fatty material on the inside wall of an artery, which leads to stenosis (narrowing of the artery). This means less blood can flow through the artery, and in this case, the blood flow to the leg would be affected. This can lead to claudication, pain in the legs when walking. Angiograms are produced by injecting an X-ray opaque dye into the arteries and taking an X-ray of the affected area.
