Caption: Atherosclerosis. Coloured angiogram (X-ray) showing the presence of atherosclerosis in the aortic artery. The aorta (yellow) is pinched mid- way down on the right-side restricting blood flow. Atherosclerosis is the name for arterial narrowing due to the build-up of fatty plaque, or atheroma on the inner wall of the artery. Atheroma is a mixture of low-density lipoproteins, decaying muscle cells, fibrous tissue, clumps of blood platelets and cholesterol. The condition occurs naturally with age but is accelerated by smoking, lack of exercise, high blood pressure and diet. Angiograms are created by injecting an X-ray opaque dye into the aorta using a catheter.
