Caption: Arterial thrombosis. Coloured angiogram (arterial X-ray) showing the reduced blood flow (lower left) due to a thrombosis (upper left) in the femoral artery. The femoral artery carries oxygenated blood down into the leg. Normal blood flow is seen in the femoral artery in the leg at right. Thrombosis occurs when an abnormal clot (thrombus) forms in an undamaged blood vessel. The restricted blood flow limits the supply of oxygen and may cause pain and tissue death. The angiogram was produced by injecting a radio-opaque dye into the arteries.
