Thrombosis in leg artery. Coloured angiogram (X- ray) of a blockage (thrombosis) in the popliteal artery (white). The blockage (arrowed) is seen as the abrupt narrowing of the thick artery just to the right of centre. The bones of the knee joint are seen at upper left and lower centre. Thrombosis is a condition in which an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) becomes stuck in a blood vessel, impeding the flow of blood. This may lead to pain and the death of the tissue supplied by the blood vessel. It can be treated with anti- coagulant drugs. Angiograms are made by injecting a radio-opaque contrast medium into the blood.
