Neck aneurysm. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of an aneurysm of the carotid artery in the neck. This view is from the side, with the backbone seen at left. The aneurysm (a swelling in an artery) is at upper right (orange). One of the major risks is that the aneurysm will burst, and massive internal bleeding can cause death, or cut off the blood supply to the brain (a stroke). The usual treatment is surgical repair. CT scanning uses X-rays to scan the body from different angles. Computers create a 3D image of the area scanned.
