Caption: colour enhanced 3D angiogram of the vertebral artery in which a stent was placed to treat an area of severe narrowing. A stent is a wire strut-like device which forces a blood vessel open. The vertebral artery (located in the chest) is important in supplying blood flow to the back of the brainstem and cerebellum. The narrowing of it can lead to a devastating stroke. This was treated by enlarging the vessel with a balloon (angioplasty) and putting a stent (wire cage) to keep it open.
