Caption: Abdominal aortic aneurysm. 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an aneurysm (swelling at upper right) of the abdominal aorta at the level of the kidneys. This is a frontal view, with the arteries shown in blue. The aorta is the body's major artery. An aneurysm is a weakening of the walls of a blood vessel, leading to swelling and rupture. In the aorta, such rupturing would be swiftly fatal. Surgery is needed to repair the aorta and implant a stent to strengthen the artery walls. MRI scanning uses powerful magnets and radio waves to look at structures inside the body. In addition, a contrast medium has been injected into the blood to highlight the blood vessels, a technique known as angiography.
