Caption: Thrombosis of leg arteries. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of thrombosis of the leg arteries (white) in a 63-year-old man with arteritis (inflammation of the arteries). A thrombosis is the disruption of the body's blood supply by the formation of an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel. Here, the thrombus has caused a blockage just above the knee at left, in the final part of the right femoral artery. The blood supply to the lower leg has been maintained by the collateral arterial network, which can take over if the main blood vessels are damaged. If the thrombus detaches and travels to the heart, lungs or brain, it can be fatal.
