Caption: Narrowed neck artery. Coloured X-ray of stenosis (narrowing) of a the left vertebral artery (pink, down right) in the neck of a 49-year-old woman. This view from the front shows the spine down centre, and the skull at top. The narrowed area of the artery is at lower right, where the artery leaves the subclavian artery below it. This narrowing has been caused by a build-up of fatty deposits (atheroma) on the blood vessel wall, and the reduction of blood supply to the brain could cause a stroke. For images of the treatment of this condition with a stent, see M175/531-533. A contrast medium has been injected into the blood to highlight the blood vessels, a technique known as angiography.
