Caption: Stent in neck artery. X-ray of a stent (lower right) that has been implanted to treat stenosis (narrowing) of the left vertebral artery (blue, down right) in the neck of a 49-year-old woman. This view from the front shows the spine down left, and the skull at top. The stent and stenosis is where the artery leaves the subclavian artery below it. The narrowing was caused by a build-up of fatty deposits (atheroma) on the blood vessel wall, and the reduction of blood supply to the brain could have caused a stroke. For the condition before treatment, see M175/530. A contrast medium has been injected into the blood to highlight the blood vessels, a technique known as angiography.
