Caption: Thrombosis of leg arteries. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of thrombosis of the leg arteries (red) in a patient with arteritis (inflammation of the arteries) and stenosis (narrowing of the arteries) caused by fatty deposits of atheroma. A thrombosis is the disruption of the body's blood supply by the formation of an abnormal blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel. Here, the thrombus has caused a blockage just above the knee at left, in the final part of the right femoral artery. The blood supply to the lower leg has been maintained by the collateral arterial network, which can take over if the main blood vessels are damaged.
