Caption: Iliac aneurysm, CT scan. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of a pelvis in frontal view. At top, just below the abdominal aorta, the left and right iliac arteries are bulging, a condition known as an aneurysm. If left untreated, the blood vessels can rupture. Risk factors for aneurysm include smoking, high blood pressure, infection and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). This image was produced using a multi-slice CT scanner, which uses a thin X-ray beam to scan around the patient. Contrast agent, injected into the blood stream, allows the scanner to detect the blood vessels. A computer reconstructs the data into coloured 3-D images of the body. This image was created using OsiriX medical imaging software.
