Caption: Aortic dissection. 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a 67-year-old man with an aortic dissection. The aorta, the body's main artery, is running vertically down centre (red). The heart has been removed from this image. A dissecting aorta is a type of aneurysm where the layers of the wall of the artery have split (dissected, seen most clearly at centre). The aorta is also affected by atherosclerosis, a narrowing (stenosis) caused by the accumulation of fatty deposits (atheroma, white areas) in the artery.
