Caption: Atheroma plaques. Coloured 3D frontal computed tomography (CT) scan of the head and upper chest of a 78-year-old man. Many atheroma plaques (fatty deposits, white) are seen lining the aorta (lower centre), the body's main artery, and other blood vessels branching off it. The plaques narrow the arteries, raising blood pressure. Treatment is usually with either balloon angioplasty or a stent to re-open the arteries.
