Caption: Impetigo. Crusty, honey-coloured sore around a woman's eyebrow, caused by impetigo. Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that usually affects the face, particularly the area around the nose and mouth. The bacteria, usually staphylococci, enter a break in the skin and cause small fluid-filled blisters to develop. These burst, producing moist weeping areas surrounded by a honey-coloured crust where the fluid has dried. Antibiotics and gentle washing clear up the problem in about five days. Impetigo was once extremely common, but occurs less frequently now because of improved standards of personal hygiene.
