Caption: MRSA skin infection. View of the skin of a 91 year old man showing the red rash of an impetigo-like infection caused by MRSA bacteria. MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) are extremely dangerous bacteria which are resistant to almost all known antibiotics. As such, they can still cause fatal infections in some cases. The bacteria are quite common in hospitals, especially in geriatric wards, and are a major problem. Some strains can be destroyed by certain drugs (such as vancomycin), but others are seemingly immune.
