Caption: Vivitron particle accelerator. Graphic showing the design of the Vivitron electrostatic particle accelerator at the Centre de Recherches Nucleaires, Strasbourg. The accelerator fits inside the composite frame at centre (yellow). This is surrounded by large, discrete electrodes (blue). The whole assembly is held inside a pressurised container filled with sulphur hexafluoride gas. Vivitron will be used to collide atomic nuclei together to form amalgamated, 'superdeformed' nuclei. These fairly stable, elliptical nuclei emit gamma rays which may be used to study nuclear structure.
