Caption: Hepatitis B. Light micrograph of a section through the liver of a patient with chronic active hepatitis B. Hepatocytes (liver cells, pink) are inflamed and swollen and there are also areas of necrotic (dead) tissue (white). Hepatitis is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the liver, which leads to degeneration and thickening (scarring) of the tissue (cirrhosis). The virus can be transmitted by sexual contact, blood, and the use of contaminated needles. Those at risk of contracting hepatitis B can be immunised against it. Treatment is with antiviral drugs or immune system modulators.
