Caption: Hepatitis C. Light micrograph of a needle biopsy from the liver of a patient with hepatitis C. Hepatocytes (liver cells, pink) are inflamed and swollen. Inflammatory lymphatic cells (dark purple) have infiltrated the liver tissue from the portal venous system. Hepatitis is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the liver, which leads to degeneration and thickening (scarring) of the tissue (cirrhosis). The virus is transmitted by blood-to-blood contact. Treatment is with antiviral drugs and immune system modulators.
