Caption: Renal atrophy. Coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scan showing atrophy of the kidney at left due to stenosis (narrowing) of the renal artery. The kidney on the right is functioning normally. SPECT scans of the kidneys are made by injecting the patient with a radioactive tracer (such as 131 I hippuran) which concentrates in the kidneys and can be detected by a gamma camera. White and yellow areas on the image represent areas of high uptake. Computer image-processing allows a cross-sectional image to be produced, as here. Stenosis of the renal artery is usually caused by atherosclerosis.
