Caption: Kidney calcification. X-ray of the abdomen of a patient with nephrocalcinosis (calcification of the kidneys). Calcified areas (white) are seen in each kidney, either side of the spine (running down centre). Nephrocalcinosis is a form of renal (kidney) stone disease, and kidney stones (calcium salt deposits) are also present. The condition is normally due to a calcium metabolic disorder. The kidneys can be protected by hydration, and surgery may be needed to remove stones that accumulate in the urinary system. Drugs can be used to treat the underlying cause.
