Caption: Lupus erythematosus. View of the face of a woman patient suffering a facial rash in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). As seen here, SLE produces a red, blotchy rash of various severity, over the cheeks and bridge of the nose. Although a mild form of the disease affects only the skin, SLE causes a chronic inflammatory disease of connec- tive tissue that can affect other internal organs. It is regarded as an autoimmune disease. Sufferers feel ill, fatigue, fever, nausea, loss of appetite and joint pain. There may be anaemia, kidney failure and arthritis. Blood tests confirm the diagnosis. Treatment aims to reduce inflam- mation, including use of corticosteroid drugs.
