Caption: Lentigo. Close-up of a dark "liver spot" on a 73 year old man's skin. This condition, also called lentigo or "age spots", produces flat brown patches of discoloration on the skin. The dark colour is caused by excessive production of the skin pigment melanin. Lentigo spots are more common in the elderly and in people exposed to a lot of sun. They are most frequent in Caucasians but are also seen in Asian people. This spot is benign, but sometimes they can develop into a slow-growing form of skin cancer.
