Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Parasite under skin. Foot of a 33 year old woman showing a cutaneous larva migrans (creeping eruption) skin rash. The red track shows the movements of the burrowing larvae of nematode hookworms. Their movement causes extreme irritation. The hookworms are usually parasitic in cats and dogs. The parasites are picked up by walking barefoot on soil or sand contaminated by the faeces of these animals. The larvae penetrate the skin of the foot and burrow randomly around. Hookworm infections are treated with the anthelmintic drugs diethylcarbamazine or thiabendazole.
