Caption: Leishmaniasis. Light micrograph of a section through a human liver infected by Leishmania donovani, a parasitic protozoan that causes visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). The protozoa (pale dots) lie within the cytoplasm (purple) of the infected white blood cells. Around the edge of the image are healthy cells (pink) and red blood cells (smaller pink objects). There are two main forms of L. donovani, one for each of its hosts: humans and sandflies. These amastigotes (Leishman- Donovan bodies) occur in humans. The parasite pas- ses between hosts through sandfly bites. Without drug treatment, kala-azar can be fatal. Brightfie- ld illumination. Magnification: x250 at 35mm size.
