Caption: Lymphangiectasia. Gross specimen of a colon affected by lymphangiectasia, a condition in which the lymphatic vessels fail to drain properly and become swollen (pale dots). Lymph is the fluid in which white blood cells and proteins travel throughout the body. In lymphangiectasia, leakage of proteins into the colon causes weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting and oedema (abnormal fluid accumulation in tissues). Dietary changes are often necessary to compensate for the nutrient loss: fats are replaced by more rapidly-used triglycerides and increased amounts of proteins are required.
