Caption: Lymphangiectasia cyst, pill camera view. The cyst is filled with lymphatic fluid. Lymphangiectasia is a condition caused by dilation of the lymphatic vessels in the intestinal wall. The condition causes lymph fluid, which carries white blood cells and proteins around the body, to leak into the intestines, causing diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. As the fluid is rich in protein, it also causes a low blood protein level, which causes oedema (fluid accumulation in tissues) and weight loss. Treatment is of the underlying cause, and dietary changes can compensate for protein loss and malabsorption of nutrients. A pill camera is a pill-sized camera that is swallowed to image the digestive tract.
