This axial (cross-sectional) MRI image of an infant shows abnormal increased T2 signal (looks white) within the globus pallidus and putamen (collectively called the lentiform nuclei). This infant suffers from subacute necrotizing enceophalomyelopathy, which is also called Leigh's disease, a form of mitochondrial disorder.
