Caption: Artwork representing the onset of meningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges which are three membranes that cover and protect the brain. They are the dura matter, the arachnoid matter and the pia matter and they lie between the spongy bone of the skull and the brain. The inflammation may be viral or bacterial and usually these microorganisms reach the meninges through the bloodstream (as shown in the image) from an infection elsewhere in the body. Viral meningitis is mild and requires almost no treatment whereas bacterial meningitis is very dangerous and treated with large doses of intravenous antibiotics.
