Caption: Abscess in meningitis. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scan of a seven month old baby girl showing a subdural abscess (red, upper left) due to meningitis. The front of the brain (green & yellow), seen in horizontal (axial) section, is at top. The brain's fluid-filled cavities (ventric- les) are red. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranous meninges (seen as the wavy orange line around the brain) that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by bacterial or viral infection. The abscess has developed in the meninges as a result of the infection. While the viral form is mild, bacterial meningitis is highly dangerous and requires strong antibiotics.
