Caption: Malaria in body. Computer illustration of the passage of malaria through the human body. Malaria is a tropical disease caused by Plasmodium sp. protozoa. They enter the blood after a bite (upper left) from an infected Anopheles sp. mosquito, and travel (red arrows) through the blood to the liver (brown, lower centre). Here they multiply and invade red blood cells, causing the cells to swell and burst. The lack of red blood cells leads to anaemia, and the presence of Plasmodia in the blood causes a fever. Some Plasmodia invade more red blood cells, and others are taken up by other mosquitoes (upper right), continuing the cycle.
