Caption: Molluscum contagiosum lesions on the penis of a 29 year old man. Molluscum contagiosum is a skin disease caused by infection by molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), a type of poxvirus. It is commonly a sexually transmitted disease in adults, although it can also be spread by any contact, and it is common in young children. It causes the development of raised itchy lesions. The condition usually clears up naturally over a year or two, but medical treatments may be required if the lesions are painful or become infected. Treatments include cryosurgery (application of extreme cold) and the application of salicylic acid or vitamin A-based creams.
