Caption: Mumps. Swollen gland of a 14 year old boy with mumps parotitis, a viral infection of the parotid salivary gland (located beneath the ear). Mumps is most common in children and young teenagers. The advent of the MMR vaccine has greatly reduced its incidence, although this boy had previously been vaccinated with MMR. Symptoms of mumps usually begin with fever, headache and earache, followed by the swelling of the infected gland, which becomes very tender. Complications of mumps can include meningitis, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), swelling of the testes or ovaries and deafness. Treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms and can include anti- inflammatory drugs.
