Caption: Nappy rash due to infection from the yeast, Candida albicans. A rash around an infant's groin & buttocks is most commonly due to contact with irritants (such as ammonia) in faeces & urine. A neglected rash may become ulcerated. The raised red areas of skin in candidal nappy rash resemble psoriasis, hence its alternative name of nappy psoriasis. Candidasis is the cause of a number of human conditions, including oral & vaginal thrush. It is also one of the more common opportunistic infections in persons with AIDS. It is treated with antibiotics such as nystatin & clotrimazole.
