Precancerous naevus. Close-up of the skin of a patient showing a pigmented naevus at the pre- cancerous stage. Otherwise known as a mole, this flat area of brown pigmentation on the skin is seen beside a scale that measures centimetres. Cells of this naevus were dysplastic (abnormal). The patient was suffering from dysplastic naevus syndrome, a condition in which naevi proliferate all over the body. Most naevi are harmless and do not require any treatment. However, in this case the normally benign naevus was developing into a form of skin cancer.
