Caption: Strawberry birthmark. Image 3 of 3. This birthmark (naevus), also known as a strawberry mark or cavernous haemangioma, is the faint red mark on this 4-year-old child's back. It has faded since birth. It was caused by an abnormal distribution of blood vessels. It usually enlarges rapidly in the first few weeks after birth, causing distress but doing little harm. After about six months the lump subsides. About half of all strawberry marks will have disappeared by age five and most by age nine. Strawberry marks that cause problems, such as persistent bleeding or distress, can be removed by freezing or laser treatment. For the same mark at 11 and 30 months, see images M220/124-125.
