Caption: Nappy rash infected with Candida albicans in a 2- year-old girl. Nappy rash is initially caused by substances in the faeces and urine that irritate the skin, making it red and raw. This weakens the skin's defences, leaving it open to infection by bacteria and fungi such as C. albicans (which causes thrush). Prevention is better than cure. The baby's skin should be kept dry as much as possible. Nappy changes should be frequent and barrier creams should be used to prevent moisture coming into contact with the skin. Infection is treated with antifungal and corticosteroid creams.
