Caption: Osteochondritis dissecans. X-ray of a human knee with the joint disease osteochondritis dissecans. A fragment of detached bone appears to the left of the joint. A gap (grey) appears in the bottom of the top bone (the thigh bone, or femur), where the bone has degenerated. The small bone at right is the kneecap (patella). The big bone at the bottom is the tibia. To its left is the smaller fibula. Osteochondritis occurs when fragments of bone and cartilage break away from a joint, causing discom- fort, swelling and sometimes locking of the joint. The disorder usually starts in adolescence and its exact cause is not understood. Treatment includes surgery to remove "loose bodies" of detached bone.
